Hello! I have been a primary teacher since 1986, and have been tutoring and supply teaching for the last 6 years. Recently, I have been working 1:1 with pupils who need more confidence with basic skills in English and/or Maths, reinforcing learning from the classroom, filling in learning gaps or extending learning. I have always built good working relationships with my pupils based on trust and respect.

I can:

  •  assess your child/ren and work with them from where they are currently, tailoring sessions to their individual needs
  •  work with older pupils (KS3) who need help with handwriting and grammar
  •  offer literacy/mathematics for adults who need patient and clear help
  • teach English (written and conversational sessions) for those learning English as an additional language

Lessons can be weekly or fortnightly. I can be flexible, and offer either 45 or 60 minute sessions.

I am happy to discuss ideas with you, and look forward to working with you and/or your child/ren.

About Me

I graduated with BA (hons) in Fine Art at Coventry University in 1985, then gained a Post Graduate Certificate in Education from Nottingham University in 1986.

I worked at a large First School in Nuneaton after qualifying, then moved to Cheshire where I taught in two primary schools before moving to Berkshire where I continued teaching for 13 years before a brief period in lecturing early years practitioners through Reading University.

I began tutoring and supply teaching six years ago to have more flexibility.

I moved back to Warwickshire this April, in the Rugby area, and plan to supply teach alongside tutoring.

Alison taught my son for over a year. I could not speak any more highly of her, my son has ADHD and fine motor problems. I hired Alison to help him with this as his handwriting was unreadable. Due to his ADHD, his attention span was also short. Alison was very understanding of his needs, she was kind, patient and did lots of short and fun activities with him to gauage his interest. The work she did with him built up his confidence, Bradley was feeling frustrated and down about his writing. Not only did his writing improve, but his self esteem and his mood improved too. Bradley felt happier going to school and looked forward to learning again! I got Alison to teach my daughter who is 4, she began to recognise her own name and was beginning to write it, we all loved seeing Alison and deeply miss her. Thank you Alison for everything you did for Bradley and Kayla, they will always appreciate it, we wish that we lived close by to have you again in a heartbeat.

We cannot recommend Alison enough. We had an anxious year 5 who needed support in English and Maths after being told he was behind in both areas. Alison’s gentle but firm manner was just what was needed to build Euan’s confidence. He really enjoyed his weekly sessions with Alison and quickly we saw an improvement in his attitude to learning at home and at school. He was always eager to please her and wanted to do any homework she set for him immediately. Euan went on and passed his SATS with high scores and even gained greater depth in English. We were all sad when the time came that Euan’s sessions ended. Alison knew when the time came to naturally end the sessions with Euan. He was a little unsure of how he would cope but she explained to him that he now had all the skills to carry on and build on his new found confidence and that he didn’t need her as a ‘crutch’ to get him through. We will forever be grateful that we found Alison, she helped find our lost little boy again. Any child would be lucky to have her as a tutor. Rachel Dalgarno
