I am a Chartered Mechanical Engineer, currently taking a career break and seeking to use my skills and knowledge to help young people.

In the past year I have volunteered as a maths tutor online for Action Tutoring. There I have helped several pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds to improve their maths skills, knowledge, and instil in them a greater confidence and enthusiasm for their own abilities.

About Me

I am a Chartered Mechanical Engineer, I bring with me fifteen years of professional experience. Throughout that time I took opportunities to help and support young people. This took the form of regularly tutoring architecture students in the engineering aspects of buildings, through to being a guest lecturer at the University of Edinburgh.

Since starting my career break, I have enormously enjoyed the time I spend providing maths tuition. The pupils have engaged with what I have been able to share in lessons, and it has actually been sad when a term comes to an end. I have enjoyed imparting my maths knowledge to the pupils, but have especially enjoyed where an aspect of the pupils' fears or lack of confidence have been identified and addressed successfully.  For me, this is the most rewarding part of being a tutor.

Services

I offer online maths tutoring for pupils aged 10-16 in England and in-person maths tutoring for pupils in my local coverage area. Please see my coverage area for details.

This covers Key Stages 2, 3 and 4, which includes the period of Key Stage 2 SATs right up to GCSE.

My approach is to begin with assisting with maths homework, building up in the term to tackling topics based on the school programme and those identified from the pupil's own strengths and weaknesses.

To whom it may concern, I am writing to confirm that Brett Done has been volunteering with Action Tutoring since November 2020. Action Tutoring provides volunteer tutors to work with pupils preparing for GCSE exams or Key Stage 2 SATs in schools across the country and Brett has volunteered as a maths tutor for an hour a week at Shoreham Academy in East Sussex. Brett is a considerate and respectful tutor who goes above and beyond for his pupils. His reliability and commitment has meant that his two pupils respect him, both as a mentor and a teacher. As a result, over a five month period, their attendance has been brilliant, enabling Brett to have the most impact. Alongside this, they have become more confident in their maths subject knowledge. Brett has been a great asset to a team of nine other volunteer tutors, sharing his reflections, tips and learnings with the team on a weekly basis. If you require further information please do not hesitate to contact me on [email protected]. Kind Regards, Ellen Ritson Sussex Programme Coordinator Action Tutoring
