Hello! I’m Daisy, and I study Maths at the University of Nottingham. This year I'm taking a break from my studies and will be focussing my attention on tutoring.
I love maths and the most rewarding thing for me is to see someone who has struggled with the subject find enjoyment in it. I know the notation and logical way of thinking can be very different from other things we learn in school and that can be scary! But I really think that anyone can be good at maths and have fun learning it!!
I always enjoyed helping others to learn; in school and sixth form I took on various roles supporting younger students, then I took a year out where I worked in a childcare and homework-support centre with children age 5-13. During my first year of University I worked with Physics outreach to give planetarium shows and introduction astronomy workshops in primary schools. Now over the past year I have delivered over 250 hours of online 1-1 maths tutoring.
I tutor GCSE, and since the schools closures I have also been working lots with KS2 and KS3 students. My priority here is to provide a structured and engaging lesson during the lockdown and to help support any home learning you might have from school.
I like to think my tutoring style is characterised by making maths approachable and fun! For this reason I tend to work best with students who have struggled with maths or have low confidence in their maths skills. I'm a big fan of incorporating games into my lessons as not only can it make you 'forget' that you're learning, but I think that taking turns provides a good balance of watching examples and independent practice.
I always introduce new concepts by building on something you already understand, or by relating to something familiar. I don't want to put you on the spot, but once you are comfortable I place a high importance on asking you to explain your thinking to me so that we can spot misconceptions and learn from mistakes. I like to talk through and explain an example, then give you a chance to try a similar problem and explain back to me.
It is very important to me as a tutor to be inclusive and make the content I teach accessible for everyone. I consider it a part of the role to keep reading & attend online training events to continually improve my tutoring skills.
Most of my students opt for once-weekly lessons to either support their schoolwork or work towards an exam (or a bit of both!). I will leave a short written report after each lesson and a more in depth feedback termly when I reassess where all of my students are at both in their content knowledge and their confidence.
If you're interested, please feel free to contact me & I am always happy to offer a free initial meeting to discuss what you are hoping to get from tutoring.
