A one-page chronological summary of life experience
I am presently about to turn 63, my life and varied experience may be summarised in a series of five distinct episodes as follows,
• An early life up to my first degree graduation in 1979, with a childhood spent mostly in Norwich in East Anglia in the UK followed by three years at Nottingham Uni for a BSc hons in Mathematics including Physical Sciences and the Computer Programming of the day.
• A period living and working in South Africa almost entirely as a Seismologist with a theoretical bent at The University of the Witwatersrand which is the centre for all such research in that country. I lived and worked in S.A. between 1982 and 1992 and graduated there with my first PhD in 1989. This period was successful, however on return to the UK in 1992 I was unable to pursue this success any further and had to re-invent myself, something I welcomed at the time and still now embrace.
• The period from 1992 up to the millennium was characterised by overseas travel for personal development and various largely unskilled jobs, which I nevertheless approached with a positive and open attitude. This was a period away from professional positions but one of real value to me personally.
• From the millennium up to the present day I have been a professional teacher. This began with a F/T one-year PGCE in my home city of Norwich (obtained in 2000) and progressed through many varied positions and diverse students. As mentioned above, I’m an enthusiastic problem solver, so perhaps naturally my teaching has been focused on mathematical matters, often more recently, with the use of software. I was a natural teacher from start but I’ve learnt a huge amount by experience , from tutoring one-one at all levels and adult ages to a full lecturer’s role, managing the material and delivering lectures to cohorts of over a hundred students at HE level for a decade.
• PC (Post Covid 19) For all my teaching posts, I consistently chose to be P/T, which suited me well and, in any case, often meant effectively F/T working. The effect of the virus on P/T teaching at HE level has moved me to again re-invent my professional life. I expect that my experience as summarised above and detailed below will remain valuable. However, five years ago I took a TEFL which I then used for a year at Essex Uni Maths dept in English Language training for Post grads. I wish to expand on this initiative and pursue on-line English Language teaching with renewed enthusiasm.
