Hi! I have been a secondary English teacher for seven years and a tutor for two years. I have a proven track record of success and I am confident I can support students of any ability from Key Stage 3 up to A-Level. I love my subject and try to make teaching engaging and meaningful. I am a great believer in meeting the student where they are, and making connections with prior learning. Relationships are key, so I tend to create a safe, fun, trusting environment in lessons. I will liaise with parents if appropriate, to focus teaching on areas of need, or I can take the lead and prepare a programme of study based on exam specifications. I can work with any exam-board.
I am offering online sessions and in person sessions (for Birmingham-based students). I am based in South Birmingham.
My professional experience as a teacher includes six years at an outstanding Sandwell Academy where I achieved higher than average progress scores for students predicted grade 2-6, with diverse needs, including speaking English as a second language. I have also worked with high-achieving students, at a girls' grammar school, providing individualised sessions to help students achieve their target grades, from grade 7 to 9. I have taught English Literature to A-Level for four years and managed the A-Level curriculum. I am currently working as a supply teacher whilst undertaking a further degree.
Prior to teaching, I had a rich and varied career, including acting, directing and writing community theatre, teaching clinical communication to cancer-care clinicians, garden design, and mental-health arts administration. I have been an entrepreneur, political activist and allotment-grower, and I have two fully-grown children who have both succeeded in further and higher education. I have a cat, who is the most spoilt, and adored feline in history. I love music, festivals, walking and the natural world. I am vegetarian.
As a result, I have a broad spectrum of life experience, and a creative approach to teaching. My students have said of me that I have a "super engaging style" and that I "always go the extra mile" to help students who are struggling. I love teaching and find it a privilege to engage with young people and help them to achieve their full potential. I supported one student through his application to Cambridge (he received an offer) and he says that I am "the most influential teacher" he had at secondary school because I "taught him how to think."
I have a number of tutees already, mostly GCSE, working with me online, through Zoom or Google meet, in the evenings after school. I have four slots available at the moment. Please feel free to call me and discuss your requirements. I do not ask for any contractual commitments, so you can have a trial session and get a feel for the way we work together, before deciding, and you can cancel your sessions at any time. Sometimes just a short intervention can help to get a student back on track, if they have fallen behind for some reason, but at other times a longer period of support may be required. I can support your son or daughter all the way up to their summer exams if you require it. I am happy to work as a small group of two or three (in the same yeargroup) to keep costs down.
