Hi! My name is Fionn. I'm a PhD Philosophy student at the University of Southampton, and a graduate of the University of Oxford and the University of Reading. My area of specialisation is ethics, but I'm comfortable teaching any area of philosophy.
I started teaching in 2016. Since then, I have taught undergraduate philosophy students, mostly at Southampton, but also at King's College, London. This includes teaching seminars, marking essays, holding office hours, and designing degree course content. I have also taught philosophy to secondary school and A-level pupils. Last year, I started offering private tuition. Many of my students are either at A-level or equivalent and want help preparing for a philosophy degree, or are current philosophy degree students who want help understanding topics or writing essays. But I also teach non-philosophers: for example, I currently teach a Politics Masters student who wants help with critical thinking and debating, and I have also taught primary-school students. So whether you would like to focus on your philosophical knowledge or to develop your critical thinking or essay-writing techniques, I would be excited to help.
I can offer various lesson formats, depending on your needs. Perhaps you want to learn about a new philosophical topic for the first time. In that case, I can offer a lesson where I introduce and explain new content. Perhaps you have some familiarity with a topic but want to explore it in more depth. In that case, we could have a debate-style lesson where we delve into details. Perhaps you have written an essay but want to improve it. In that case, we could spend an hour reading through your work and discussing how to make it stronger. Above all, I am willing to work around your needs, so if you would like to work with me, please get in touch so we can discuss which style of learning will suit you best!
I grew up in Southampton, and then studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics at the University of Oxford, graduating with a 2:1 in 2015. Although I expected to like Politics and Economics more, I fell in love with Philosophy. I completed a Masters in Philosophy in 2016, and I will shortly be completing my PhD in Philosophy from the University of Southampton. I am a moral philosopher in the Aristotelian tradition.
Outside of academia, I am interested in politics, football, and chess. I live with my wife, Rachel, who I met in Oxford and married in 2019.
