I'm a recent graduate of Oxford's flagship master's degree in Philosophy, where my thesis received the highest mark in several years. I had my first Philosophy lesson when I was sixteen, and since that first lesson I've loved it too much to let go! As a tutor, it's now my pleasure to help students starting their philosophical journey to find their feet, and to work with them through the challenging material that makes Philosophy so fun.
I'm also a longtime poetry and fiction nerd, and my first degree was a combined honours BA in Philosophy and Literature. I teach English Literature too, and it's always a special joy to explore links between the two subjects with any students who are interested in both.
Philosophy is difficult and often disorienting. It can involve a lot of jargon and abstract concepts, and figuring out the right question can often be as confusing as finding the right answer! One-on-one tutorials offer the chance to work through challenging ideas slowly, and spend the most time on the areas where you feel the least clear. Usually, you'll contact me in advance to let me know about a particular topic you want to understand better, or a particular idea or paragraph with which you're struggling. I'll prepare some materials ahead of our lesson, and then we can puzzle out the philosophical issues together!
Tutorials can also be an excellent way to build your essay-writing skills, and I often spend time guiding students through the writing process sentence-by-sentence and paragraph-by-paragarph. I am happy to set homework to be completed between lessons (so long as this doesn't overburden you within your existing homework schedule), and provide you with written feedback on completed work. Besides this, we can also spend time running through feedback you've already recieved from teachers or lecturers, in order to help you benefit from that feedback as much as possible.
I offer lessons for students working towards their Philosophy A-Level or studying for their undergraduate Philosophy degree, and for anyone who just wants to have fun and do some Philosophy! I am also a first-class English Literature graduate, and offer lessons in this subject for GCSE and A-Level students. My standard lessons are one hour in length, but I'm also happy to give longer lessons of up to two hours at a time.
