I am a Cambridge maths graduate and experienced full-time tutor with a teaching qualification providing one-to-one home tuition to GCSE, A-level and undergraduate students across London.

About Me

I have 14 years of experience as a one-to-one tutor.  I am a maths graduate of the University of Cambridge (Pembroke College, BA (Hons), MA and M Math degrees) and have a teaching qualification (DTLLS, University of London). I am also an assistant examiner at A-level for OCR/MEI.

Every student is different: past maths learning and experience, present interests and concerns, and future learning needs and goals are all individual. Accordingly, my tutoring approach puts meeting each student`s needs at its heart. This requires careful, ongoing assessment of current understanding and the use of effective teaching techniques to deepen and extend this, build confidence and motivation for continued development, and foster independent learning and evaluation skills.

I am a friendly tutor who uses my tutoring experience and subject knowledge to help build each student' s confidence and develop their mathematical understanding.  Specific teaching practices I value and employ for the benefit of my students include:

Avoiding assuming prior understanding

Communicating clearly and precisely

Asking numerous, varied questions which test understanding

Eliciting responses without leading, and giving time to answer

Requiring the student to explain their thought processes

Listening to responses and observing carefully, to assess understanding Identifying misconceptions and gaps in understanding and correcting these

Valuing the student’s contributions and answering their questions carefully

Setting clear objectives for, facilitating, recognising and praising student progress

Being friendly, positive, enthusiastic and motivational

Being empathic and respectful of the student’s autonomy

Providing constructive feedback on completed work

Stimulating the student by providing an appropriate level of challenge and extension

Requiring the student to reason mathematically and explain their reasoning

Explaining flaws in the student's mathematical logic and providing corrective guidance and encouragement

Providing ample opportunity for practice and consolidation of mathematical topics

Highlighting important points and repeating them regularly

Using different methods and comparing their efficiency to inform method selection

Highlighting the role of mathematics in other fields of study, everyday life and work

Appreciating the specifications for and the demands of the maths course the student is studying

Highlighting mathematical knowledge the student already has, to reduce anxiety

Making connections between related mathematical concepts and highlighting patterns

Supporting using related examples, to extend mathematical knowledge and build confidence

Breaking multi-stage mathematical tasks down into small steps

Requiring the student to interpret and communicate mathematical information

Services

I specialise in one-to-one home maths tutoring, and am able to travel to students across London.  I do not offer online tuition.

GCSE, A-level and undergraduate tuition provided.  I do not support students younger than Year 10.

I recommend 1h lessons at GCSE, and 1.5h lessons at A-level and above.

Able to offer daytime home schooling and other high frequency tuition.

Adult learners welcome.

I am able to support students preparing for the STEP II and III papers used as entrance exams by some UK universities. As a Cambridge maths graduate, who took entrance exams myself, I am well placed to help students adjust to the very different style of questions they contain and advise them on question selection, and enjoy doing so.
