The best type of tutor for you will differ depending on your needs. I know it can be hard to get a real sense of what a tutor can offer just through reading these descriptions, so I offer a free initial 30 minute session to allow you to see how my style suits you or your young person.
I studied chemistry at UCL, which consistently ranks in the global top 10 Universities (QS). I achieved not only a first class degree, but firsts in every module i took including diverse electives: from philosophy, through anatomy, to neuroscience. Aside from being something impressive to put on my CV, this achievement demonstrates my ability to understand the varied requirements for exam success across a range of formats.
Since graduation I have worked as a private tutor mainly for KS3 and A - Level. I have also worked extensively in science communication: teaching science afterschool clubs, working as an academic note-taker/study skills advisor for university students, delivering in-school workshops on science and performing chemistry demonstration assemblies (exploding balloons of hydrogen, elephants toothpaste and the like).
I perform as an acrobat in contemporary circus performances, and have a small circus theatre company in which i am the back of a giant two person puppet of a scottish Wildcat.
I am a father, keen surfer and cyclist, and carer for a very sweet cat who you might see climbing around my shoulders during tutoring sessions.
I like to balance encouraging and cultivating an excitement and interest in the subject, alongside a pragmatic and effective approach to navigating the strictures of academic assessment.
I believe not having trained formally as a teacher allows me a vantage point that is distinct, and is one young people are likely not to have experienced within the school systems. I draw from my own experiences of what worked for me, techniques i've learnt subsequently that i have seen work for others i have tutored, alongside forms of engagement I've picked up during my time working in science communication to allow me to offer something a little bit different.
Having developed a solid foundation in chemistry during my degree, i am able to be responsive and flexible in my approach to lessons and can use my oversight to clarify which elements are just those to be remembered by rote, and which can be made infinitely easier by learning the theory underlying them.
I am always keen to involve any parents or carers, when desired, to make them aware of the changing needs, and progress of the student, if this is something that is mutually desired by parent/carer and young person.
I currently am offering online tuition only, for chemistry from KS3 to university application.
