My approach is completely personalized as a result of the initial meeting when we develop a learning agreement based on what the student identifies as their strengths and weaknesses, the outcome they are working towards and the time frame within which to achieve it. Our sessions will include resources and opportunities for assessment with immediate feedback and we will modify and develop the way we use the tutor time as our tutorial relationship develops. I use a variety of strategies including the traditional power points and handouts but also puppets, card sorts and you tube clips and recordings - whatever works for the student's learning style. I aim for intense yet interesting sessions where the student ends up saying they know more at the end than they did at the beginning. Our sessions also incorporate the greater demands for analysis and evaluation as well as the specification content. I am very confident when it comes to statistics and research methods and can incorporate them into the sessions as required. I have diplomas in Life Coaching and Advanced CBT and use the knowledge and skills gained to support my students to achieve their goals.

About Me

I have taught A level Psychology for over half of my life and have recently completed a sabbatical where I got to experience a Gap Year like the ones many of my students have enjoyed. I travelled around Namibia and went on safari, as well as spending time in Italy, Ireland and the Netherlands. I volunteered for a local hospice charity, becoming manager until I realised I needed to come back into the profession I love. I am Food Tour Guide in Harrogate and York as well as going  to live comedy and music events whenever I can . I enjoy the beautiful countryside of North Yorkshire, walking my bull terriers Kiki and Bootise.

Services

I have taught Psychology A level since 1992, as well as roles in teacher training, INSET for my local authority and specifications approval for the new Linear A levels. I was also a Director of Sixth Form from 2004 to 2016. I was graded outstanding both by internal observers and external Ofsted inspectors. I have a very clear understanding of the skills needed to be a successful A level student in Psychology specifically as well as generally as a result of my pastoral experience. I can provide support with AQA, OCR, Cambridge International, Scottish Highers and Edexcel specifications.

Louise is an exceptional tutor who helped our son with his A level Psychology. Her previous experience in education as a Dept Head in her subject, her in-depth knowledge of the Psychology curriculum and assessing examination papers along with previous role of Head of Sixth Form, enables her to adopt a multi-faceted approach to one to one teaching that can be missing in the classroom. Her approach incorporates coaching in learning and revision techniques, building confidence and organisation skills as well as developing an understanding of the topic to meet the framework requirements of A-Level marking and assessment. She has a calm and reassuring manner, quickly “tunes in” to the student and can assess the strengths and development needs and adapt accordingly. As a result, Louise is not only able to get the best out of a student in relation to the A level subject and exam requirements but also provides a positive environment for self-development. We highly recommend her.

Louise is an excellent tutor who has not only helped my daughter progress in her A level psychology, but also helped support her journey as a Sixth form student. The one to one tuition that Louise provides has been specifically tailored to my daughter’s needs. Louise takes the time to really get to know her students and focuses on maximising their areas of strength and helping improve any areas of weakness. My daughter is an excellent oral communicator but found it difficult to express those ideas in writing. With Louise’s help my daughter is now producing superb psychology essays, a skill which she will need to pass her A level but also in any future academic study. Additionally, Louise is a very experienced sixth form tutor. She was able to help my daughter improve her UCAS personal statement and work with her to identify the university psychology course which would best suit her aspirations. I cannot recommend Louise highly enough.

Louise goes the extra mile! She is patient and methodical in her approach to tutoring, tailoring it to the student’s learning style. She has a wealth of experience and knowledge, which clearly filters through. Louise is passionate about helping the student achieve their potential and made learning fun for my daughter, who was predicted a D in Year 13 and told that a B was far too ambitious (by her schoolteacher). We’re hoping for an A on results day! Thank you, Louise
