Hi. I have been teaching since 1996 and have taught in mainstream & independant Schools and Colleges both in the UK and internationally.
During this time I have been a Geography and PE coordinator and Head of Department (KS 3/4/5), and BTEC Leisure and Tourism tutor.
I am currently teaching GSCE and A Level Geography at Cambridge Tutors College, East Croydon.
Due to lockdowns over the past year a great deal of my tuition has been delivered online so have gained a great deal of experience delivering lessons online.
I qualified as a teacher in 1996 after two additional careers in the military as an MP and then as a Retail Manager working for B&Q. While studying for my first degree in Bangor, N. Wales I also pursued instructional qualifications in outdoor pursuits that included mountain-walking, climbing, and kayaking. In addition to these I have gone on to qualify as a coach/instructor in powerboating, archery, mountain-biking, forest School, first aid. I followed this up with a PGCE teaching Geography and Outdoor Educatoin.
A keen advocate of outdoor experiences geography has played a consistent role throughout my educational and teaching career, teaching it not only as a curriculum subject but also promoting its beauty and uniqueness and as an educational medium to enhance teamwork and self-confidence in others e.g., working with school students I have led expeditions to Andes in S. America, the High Atlas in Morocco, and the Himalayas in N. India, including tailor-made experiences in the UK.
My teaching experiences have taken me around the world e.g., taught in N. America for one year, and New Zealand for two years, and I have taught in various locations around the UK including N. Wales, Derbyshire, Kent, Sussex, and Cumbria, in both private and public sectors. My job roles have included geography co-ordinator and Head of Department, DofE coordinator, PE teacher, BTEC PE and L&T, ICT teacher. I currently teach geography at an independent 6th form College in East Croydon, Surrey.
In my spare time I am slowly building an outdoor business called outdoorhire.uk promoting outdoor experiences, and qualifications, to people of all ages and abilities and I have found my geography background has helped bring to life their outdoor experiences, including environmental awareness, across a range of topics.
From a teaching performance viewpoint my classroom delivery of the curriculum has always been Good to Outstanding, along with my online tuition. I try to promote a relaxed and friendly atmosphere when teaching online as this helps students (regardless of age) engage more effectively, which is crucial to the online learning experience (while we are not in a classroom setting) during these difficult regional and national lockdown periods.
Bearing in mind that both this last curriculum year and the current curriculum year exam grades are reliant on Teacher/Tutor assessment, at the end of the 2019/20 curriculum year the highest grades achieved by my students was a grade 8 at GCSE and B at A Level. All my students passed.
Aside from enjoying being a father to three children and a husband to Fay my favourite pastimes are mountaineering and climbing, cross-country running and mountain-biking.
Travelling to a client in the current Covd-19 climate: Although not ruled out, before travelling to a client to teach we would need to complete a Covid-19 risk assessment to determine levels of risk, and we would have to comply with current national, and local, guidelines.
I am able to teach these subjects and levels:
KS 3 / 4 / 5
Geography
PE
BTEC
PE
Leisure & Tourism
