I'm Paul and I provide tuition for university students in Sociology, Psychology, Quantitative Methods, Research Methods and SPSS.  My expertise and experience are much greater than you are likely to get with many other private tutors. My background is in Psychology (BSc) and Sociology (MA and PhD) but I've taught undergraduate and postgraduate students from a variety of different social science backgrounds in a lecturing capacity at a Russell Group University (4 years full-time experience) and as a private tutor (1000+ hours experience). I currently hold the role of Honorary Research Fellow at the Department of Sociology, York and continue to publish my own research in peer-reviewed international journals.

About Me

I left my role in academia to be my own boss in 2017. I now tutor students privately and run my own social and market research consultancy.

After completing my PhD in 2013, I taught research methods (including introductory and advanced quantitative methods) for four years as a full-time Teaching Fellow and Associate Lecturer in the Sociology Department at the University of York.

I convened a 150 student Social Research Methods module for 3 years and set and marked undergraduate and postgraduate coursework and assignments on a variety of different topics relating to research methods, SPSS, and data analysis. I've marked thousands of pieces of undergraduate coursework, as well as Masters coursework using advanced data analysis methods, such as regression, cluster analysis, factor analysis and many more.

As a supervisor at York I supervised around 40 undergraduate dissertations, and about 10 Masters dissertations. A good proportion of these students achieved 1st and starred 1st grades.

As a private tutor over the past two years I have tutored over 1000 hours with University students, University staff and professionals. Most of this work has been focused on helping undergraduate and postgraduate students with research methods and statistical analysis in SPSS.

I remain an active researcher within academia. My areas of scholarly interest are health, food, and quantitative and innovative methods. Two of the academic articles I have published in peer reviewed journals are listed below. The first paper in the list below was nominated for and awarded the Sociological Research Online award for Excellence and Innovation.

"I am currently completing an MSc Psychology conversion course as a distance learner. Quantitative analysis was not something that was covered in depth during my undergraduate degree and being dyslexic numbers were not my forte. I was receiving very little support from my university so decided to seek some private guidance. The support I received from Paul was impeccable! He guided me through every stage with an abundance of patience, making me feel confident enough to really engage and get the most out of each session. Nothing was ever too much and Paul went above and beyond to help me reach my full potential. Thanks to Paul I achieved a merit in an assignment I believed I was doomed to fail and I now plan on carrying out quantitative research for my dissertation."

"I was taught by Dr. Paul Chappell as both an undergraduate and as a postgraduate student at the University of York where Paul taught social research methods, including advanced quantitative methods using SPSS. Paul is an exceptional teacher. His demonstrations of statistical techniques are not only clear, authoritative and comprehensive, but are a genuine pleasure to attend – a sentiment shared by all my cohort. Paul is professional, friendly and approachable and his enthusiasm for the subject is infectious. He is an authority on the application of both traditional and innovative methods of social research and communicates his knowledge of the subject cogently to students at undergraduate and postgraduate level. I feel privileged to have been taught by Paul – and I can’t speak highly enough of him as a teacher, and as a colleague. I am convinced that students at all levels will find his tuition invaluable."

"I highly recommend Paul Chappell, he is very approachable and friendly but more importantly he is extremely knowledgeable around SPSS and Stats offering the correct support tailored to each individual. I would not have graduated without him."
