I have over 17 years’ worth of tutoring experience in History, Politics and Economics. I primarily work for a sixth form tutorial college in Oxford in addition to being a local councillor where I work on policy relating to the environment, local services and finance as part of my remit. I have helped students achieve excellent result in their exams and gain entry to their first-choice university with many opting for Oxford, Cambridge and the Russell group. In addition I provide assistance with coursework research and planning, devising revision strategies throughout years 12 and 13 and coaching end of year examinations for year 12 students as well as those sitting their A levels.
For History I cover the early modern era in Europe right up to the French Revolution (the focus of my undergraduate dissertation) - with a particular focus on Tudor and Stuart England, France under the Bourbons, the Dutch Revolt and the Hapsburg/Valois rivalry. I also cover modern History in which I offer British, American, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Indian, South African and Chinese history (which I studied to Masters level alongside Politics), with a particular focus on the revolutions of the 19th and 20th century and the Cold War. I also teach medieval and ancient history as well as classical civilisations. For Politics I offer Ecologism (the topic of my Masters Dissertation) and Anarchism as additional ideologies and tutor both the politics of the USA and Global Politics. I am experienced using all the exam boards for Economics and specialise in the macroeconomic components of the syllabus.
I have been working as a tutor for both private clients and local councils for the past 17 years, originally to supplement my income but now in a more permanent capacity. I have worked with home-schooled pupils, excluded or referred pupils, those considered at risk and in care as well as high achievers looking to get into elite universities and students looking to improve their grades to open up a wider choice of university options. At university I worked with students and sixth form pupils on writing techniques and confidence in order to faciliate their transer to higer education. In addition I have also covered some ESOL classes during the summer holidays.
I also maintain an active research agenda with a focus on the current political, economic and historical significance of environmental issues, especially climate change and sustainability as well as the energy transitionsin the UK and globally. My research and teaching are integral to each other and a crucial aspect of both my local council poisiton and my role as a personal tutor, in which I'm able to stay on top of the changes occurring in contemporary society and infuse this into my teaching approach. In my free time I enjoy statying active, the great outdoors, gardening, reading, writing, travel and cooking all sorts of spicy food. I am based in rural Oxfordshire, and happy to travel to clients. I do ask for a contribution from clients for time and costs for journeys outside of my immediate area.
I offer History, Politics and Economics for students aged from 14 up topostgraduate and I specialise as an exam coach and coursework supervisor, as well as covering revision schedules, home-schooling and grade improvement study. I have worked as a tutor for both private clients and Oxfordshire and London borough councils, teaching many home-schooled pupils, excluded or referred pupils, and those considered at risk and in care - as well as high achievers looking to get into elite universities and students looking to improve their grades to open up a wider choice of university options. While working at a university I taught students and sixth form pupils writing techniques and was able to build confidence in their abilities so as to successfully make the step up from A levels. In addition to my tutoring work I maintain an active research portfolio where I focus on the current political, economic and social significance of environmental issues, especially climate change and sustainability - as well as the energy transitions that are required. I work mainly with schools in this capacity offering curriculum enhancement expertise as well as assisting in extracurricular activities. I also have clients in the private sector who draw on my experience as a consultant. For me research and teaching are two sides of the same coin; I find that by doing one I also strengthen the other. By combining my research and writing with my teaching I am able to stay fully engaged with the changes occurring in contemporary society and work this into my teaching approach to the benefit of my clients.
